Search quality rater vs AI evaluator: same skills, different questions

A search quality rater asks whether a result meets the need of the person who typed the query, in a specific place and language. An AI evaluator asks whether a single answer is accurate, complete and safe. Rater roles are usually tied to a country; evaluator roles more often ask for a profession or field.

Key points

  • Raters judge intent and locale; evaluators judge correctness.
  • Rater roles are usually limited to residents of one market.
  • Evaluator roles often ask for a degree or professional background.
  • Both reward applying long guidelines literally.

Rating search results and evaluating AI answers both involve reading something and deciding how good it is. The difference is the question you are answering.

The rater’s question: does this meet the need?

A search rater starts from a query and imagines the person who typed it, in a specific place and language. “Pharmacy open now” means something different in Milan than in Mexico City. Ratings depend on intent and locale as much as on the page itself, which is why rater roles are almost always tied to a country.

That shows in current listings. The Ads Quality Rater – Spanish (Mexico) and Ads Quality Rater – Spanish (Argentina) roles are separate jobs for the same language, because local knowledge is the point.

The evaluator’s question: is this right?

An AI evaluator usually has a single answer in front of them and asks whether it is accurate, complete and safe. Local context still matters, but subject knowledge matters more. That is why evaluator roles often ask for a profession rather than a place.

Skills that transfer

  • Reading long guidelines and applying them literally.
  • Separating your own preference from the standard you were given.
  • Writing short, specific justifications.

Skills that do not

Raters need current knowledge of their local market: brands, services, how people search. Evaluators need depth in a field. If you have the first, look for rater roles in your country; if you have the second, look for evaluator roles in your field.

Both kinds of listing are on OpenJob, each with its eligibility rules shown separately from the language requirement. See current roles.

Frequently asked questions

Can I be a search rater outside my country?

Usually not. Rating depends on local knowledge of brands, services and how people search, so roles are tied to the market you live in. The same language can have separate roles for different countries. Check the eligible countries on each listing before applying.

Which is easier to get, rater or evaluator work?

It depends on your profile. Rater roles need current local knowledge and careful guideline reading, but rarely a degree. Evaluator roles in specialist fields screen on qualifications. If you have neither, start with general rater or annotation work to build a track record.

Do search raters and AI evaluators use the same skills?

Partly. Both read long guidelines, apply them literally, separate personal preference from the standard and write short justifications. Raters additionally need local market knowledge; evaluators need depth in a subject. Those differences decide which roles suit you.
