“Remote” does not mean worldwide: reading location rules in AI listings

A remote AI job is not necessarily open worldwide. Many listings accept only residents of specific countries, because of contracts and tax, local market knowledge, professional licences or sanctions. Language and location are separate requirements: a Spanish role may be open only in Mexico or only in Spain. Read eligible countries before anything else.
Key points
- Remote describes where you work, not who can apply.
- Rater roles are usually tied to one market.
- Medical and legal roles often need a locally valid licence.
- OpenJob keeps language and eligible countries as separate fields.
A listing can say “Remote” and still only accept people living in one country. Location rules are one of the most common reasons good candidates are screened out, so they are worth reading first.
Why roles are restricted
- Contracts and tax. Some platforms can only contract with residents of countries where they have an entity, or use an employer of record limited to one country.
- The project itself. Search and ads rating depends on local knowledge, so roles are tied to a market.
- Professional licences. Medical and legal roles often require a licence valid in a specific country.
- Sanctions. Some platforms state that they cannot work with people in embargoed regions.
Language is not location
A role for Spanish speakers may be open only in Mexico, or only in Spain. OpenJob keeps language and eligible countries as separate fields for this reason.
When the source is vague
Some platforms show a single “listing location” without saying whether it is a requirement. Where that happens, our pages say so in plain words rather than guessing a list of countries. In those cases the application form, which often asks where you live, is the real test.
Visa and work status
A few listings note that they cannot support certain visa statuses, such as H-1B or STEM OPT in the United States. If that applies to you, check before investing time in assessments.

Frequently asked questions
Why can’t I apply to a remote job from my country?
Platforms can usually contract only where they have a legal entity or employer of record, some projects need local market knowledge, licensed roles require a local licence, and sanctions exclude some regions. Any of these limits a remote role to certain countries.
How do I find AI jobs open worldwide?
Look for listings whose eligibility says worldwide, and confirm on the official page, since some platforms show only a vague listing location. On OpenJob you can browse by country eligibility; the list below shows roles currently marked as open worldwide.
Can I use a VPN to apply from another country?
No. Platforms verify location through ID, tax forms, payment details and sometimes IP checks. Misstating your location usually breaks the contract and can lead to removal and unpaid work. Apply only to roles open where you legally live.
