Is Outlier legit?
Outlier is the contributor platform of Scale AI, a well-known AI data company. The listings we track link to outlier.ai and describe freelance, fully remote work with flexible hours. Two points from the listings themselves are worth knowing before you apply: registration and the assessment are separate from project allocation, so no immediate task, minimum rate or workload is guaranteed; and onboarding or other non-core work may pay less than the advertised core rate.
What Outlier work involves
- Ranking and rating answers written by AI models, often in a specific language.
- Writing prompts and reference answers, and checking factual accuracy.
- Voice evaluation projects, where you judge or record spoken conversations.
- Coding projects: writing and answering computer-science questions and ranking AI-generated code.
How much Outlier pays
The figures in the box above are calculated live from the Outlier roles we currently list, using only rates the platform publishes, without conversion or estimates. Ranges are usually set per person, by experience, language and location, so the top of a range is a ceiling rather than a promise. Compare roles in the same unit, per hour or per task, and read our guide to advertised rates vs actual earnings.
Who can apply
Requirements depend on the project. Language roles ask for fluent reading and writing in the target language, often with residence in a specific country. Coding roles list languages such as Python, Java, JavaScript or C++. Listings state that you need authorisation to work in your country of residence and that no employment or visa sponsorship is offered.

Frequently asked questions
Is Outlier AI legit?
Yes. Outlier is the contributor platform of Scale AI, and its roles are published on outlier.ai, where you apply for free. Our listings show freelance, remote work paid by the hour for core tasks. Common frustrations come from waiting for tasks after onboarding, which the listings themselves warn about.
How much does Outlier pay per hour?
It depends on the project, language and your profile. The Outlier roles we currently track publish hourly rates for core work; the live figures are in the table above. Listings note that onboarding and non-core work may pay less, so the advertised rate is a ceiling, not a guarantee.
Why do I have no tasks on Outlier?
Registration and assessment are separate from project allocation. Tasks arrive when a project needs your language, field or country, so waiting is common. Keep your profile complete and apply to roles that match your background. Never pay anyone who promises faster access to tasks.
Can I work for Outlier from any country?
No. Many Outlier roles are tied to a country of residence, especially language projects, and you need authorisation to work where you live. Check the eligible countries on each listing before starting the assessment, since it can take an hour or more.
How we collect this data
OpenJob is an independent aggregator, not an employer and not affiliated with Outlier. We list only roles we can trace to an official page, show pay exactly as published and remove closed roles; the numbers on this page recalculate automatically. Details on our methodology page.
