Outlier AI is a real platform, run by Scale AI, that pays freelancers to train AI models. It pays weekly and has thousands of public reviews. Getting in takes an online test, not an interview, and once accepted there is no guaranteed amount of work: treat it as extra income, not a salary.

What Outlier AI is and how it works

Outlier connects people with specific skills (languages, coding, science, professional expertise) with companies building AI models. The work is human judgment: you review and improve what an AI writes or says so it becomes more accurate and natural. On its homepage Outlier says it has paid more than $500 million to experts and onboarded more than 700,000 PhD and master’s students.

The link to Scale AI

In its official FAQ, Outlier describes itself as a platform operated by Scale AI, one of the best known AI data companies. The site’s legal terms are issued by Smart Ecosystems. It is not an anonymous website: an established company stands behind it.

What AI trainers actually do

  • Pick the better answer between two AI responses to the same question.
  • Write prompts: questions or instructions that act as a starting point for the model.
  • Edit and rate responses, explaining your judgment in writing.

In voice projects, for example, you hold a simulated conversation with an AI voice model and then review recorded conversations for naturalness, helpfulness and audio quality.

Is Outlier AI legit? Reviews and complaints

Outlier is not a scam: it pays and has thousands of public reviews. Opinions are split, though, so it is worth knowing both sides before you apply.

What contributors like

On Trustpilot Outlier scores about 4 out of 5 from more than 5,500 reviews (checked on 28 October 2026), and 62% of reviews give 5 stars. The most common positives are on-time weekly payments, freedom to choose your hours and projects people find interesting.

The most common complaints

About 20% of reviews give 1 star. Recurring complaints are:

  • No tasks for long periods: even after acceptance, days or weeks can pass without work for your profile.
  • Removal from projects or disabled accounts, sometimes without a clear explanation.
  • Slow support when something goes wrong with an account.

These are individual reviews, not facts confirmed by Outlier, but they repeat often enough to take seriously.

Our verdict

Outlier is a serious platform, but income is unpredictable. It works well as a side income for people with flexible time. It is not a fit if you need a fixed monthly income.

Who can apply

According to the official FAQ you need:

  • at least an associate degree; some projects ask for a bachelor’s, master’s or PhD;
  • a valid ID;
  • a mobile phone number from your country of residence;
  • an up-to-date CV and a LinkedIn profile;
  • the right to work where you live (Outlier does not sponsor visas).

Each listing sets its own eligible countries. Always check the country list on the listing before you start the test.

The Aether project: English AI evaluation for generalists

Aether is one of Outlier’s English-language projects. According to Outlier workers who describe it on AI Trainer (reports from October 2026, not confirmed by Outlier), it focuses on image, video and multimodal evaluation and is aimed at generalists rather than specialists.

What the work looks like

The same reports describe four task types in the Aether onboarding exam:

  • choosing which AI edit cleanly removed furniture from a room photo;
  • judging AI images generated from sketches;
  • drawing boxes around clickable elements on screenshots;
  • rating model answers to conversations that mix text, images and video.

How to get in and what to expect

  • Entry: an onboarding exam that is graded automatically. There is no interview.
  • Pay: Outlier does not publish a rate for Aether. Workers report $5 to $25 an hour depending on country, with $17 an hour often cited. Onboarding and training time is widely reported as unpaid.
  • Risk: workers report waves of removals from the project, including one in late September 2026 that Outlier described as a quality control clearance. Accuracy in the exam and in every task matters.

If you are fluent in English and comfortable judging images and videos carefully, Aether is a practical way in without a specialist degree.

Guide: how to get accepted on Outlier and not miss the chance

Many applicants drop out at the test stage or end up without projects because of avoidable mistakes. Here is each step and what to expect.

Is there an interview?

Outlier’s official process has no interview with a person. Selection happens online: profile, identity check, skills test and then training for a specific project. Applicants who describe their experience on Indeed also report an online-only process with no live interview.

Before you start: get everything ready

  • A valid ID and your mobile phone: both are used for verification and must match your country of residence.
  • A CV and LinkedIn profile that match: list your degree, languages and skills precisely.
  • Time and focus: Outlier says general onboarding takes 30 to 90 minutes. Some applicants report that tests can take longer and are unpaid, so do it when you have time, not in a rush.

Your profile: choose your skills carefully

During onboarding you pick your areas of expertise, and the projects you are offered depend on those choices. Only list what you can really do: languages at your true level, subjects you studied, programming languages you use. An inflated profile leads to tests you will not pass.

The skills test

  • Read every instruction before answering. AI training work is judged above all on following the guidelines.
  • Quality over speed: precise, well-reasoned answers matter more than finishing fast.
  • Explain your judgment in writing clearly, because many tasks ask you to justify a rating.
  • Watch grammar and punctuation: Outlier’s listings explicitly ask for attention to grammar, punctuation and style guidelines.

Project training

After the general test, each project has its own guidelines and practice tasks. This is where you really get into a project. Read the guidelines in full, even when they are long, and reread them when they are updated. Pay during this phase can be lower than the published rate.

After you are accepted: stay active

  • Check your dashboard and email often: project invitations arrive there and available tasks can run out quickly.
  • Keep quality high: removal from projects is one of the most common complaints in reviews.
  • Do not rely on Outlier alone: apply to other platforms too, so quiet periods hurt less.

How much Outlier AI pays

Published rates on current listings

Listing Published rate Main requirement
Japanese AI training up to $31/hour fluent Japanese
German Voice AI Evaluator up to $29/hour fluent German
French Voice AI Evaluator up to $25/hour fluent French
Italian Voice AI Evaluator up to $20/hour fluent Italian
AI training, coding in Italian $25 to $50/hour (core work) computer science degree (or enrolled), fluent technical Italian

Outlier states that rates vary with expertise, test results, location and project needs. Onboarding and non-core work are paid at lower rates. Some projects offer incentives: according to Outlier, its Missions programme adds 7.5% to contributors’ earnings on average.

A realistic example

At $20 an hour and 10 paid hours a week you would earn $200 before tax. Those 10 hours are not guaranteed: they depend on the projects available for your profile, and time spent on tests and training may be paid less. As an independent contractor you handle your own taxes. For more on the gap between advertised rates and real earnings, read our guide Advertised rates vs actual earnings.

When and how you get paid

Outlier pays every Tuesday for work done from the previous Tuesday to Monday (midnight UTC). The listed methods are PayPal, Airtm and ACH bank transfer. ACH works with US bank accounts; outside the US the practical options are usually PayPal and Airtm.
