What the work is, and what it isn’t
The tasks described in these listings are consistent across platforms:
- drafting realistic legal questions and scenarios in your practice area;
- reviewing AI-generated memos, contract clauses or case analysis for accuracy, and explaining what is wrong;
- writing reference answers and grading rubrics that AI output is measured against;
- annotating contracts, filings and other legal documents.
This is not document review for a law firm, and you do not advise clients. Most roles are independent contractor engagements paid by the hour, and the number of hours depends on the project.
Who can apply
- US-licensed attorneys. Most listings ask for a JD and an active US bar admission. Some also ask for experience at a large firm (BigLaw or AmLaw 100) or in a specific area such as immigration, tax, bankruptcy, securities, FDA regulation or family law.
- Lawyers outside the United States. A smaller number of roles are for other jurisdictions or languages, for example legal experts for Spain, Germany and mainland China, a general counsel role for the EU or UK, and talent pools open to J.D. or LL.B. holders. Eligible countries are shown on each listing.
- Law students and recent graduates. Cite-checking and Bluebook roles for students with law review or journal experience.
- Paralegals and legal operations staff. There are also occasional legal ops and paralegal roles.
How much remote attorney AI work pays
On 22 October 2026 there were 65 open legal roles on OpenJob, and 60 of them published an hourly rate. The median starting rate was $97.50 an hour, and half of the roles started roughly between $85 and $140. Some published ranges are very wide, such as $140–$400 an hour: the rate you are offered depends on the platform’s assessment and on the project. The live figures at the top of this page are recalculated as roles open and close. For the wider market, see our AI training jobs pay report.
How to apply
- Open a role and check the requirements, the practice area and the eligible countries.
- Click Apply. You go to the official page of the platform that hires for the role. Applying is free.
- Complete the platform’s screening. It usually includes application questions and often an AI interview. Licensed roles ask for an active bar admission, so keep your admission details at hand.
Frequently asked questions
Are these remote attorney jobs real?
Each role links to the official page of the platform that posted it, and OpenJob removes roles when they close. Never pay to apply, and only share personal or payment details on the platform’s own website. Our guide Are AI training jobs legit? explains the red flags to watch for.
Do I need experience with AI?
Usually not. Many of these listings state that no prior AI experience is required and that your legal expertise is what matters. When previous AI or annotation experience is required, the listing says so.
Is this the same as contract attorney or document review work?
No. Contract attorney jobs often mean document review for a law firm or legal staffing agency. These roles are contract work for AI projects: you create and assess legal content for AI models rather than reviewing documents for a case.
Can I do this alongside my practice?
Many roles are part-time contracts with flexible hours, and most listings describe the expected commitment. If you are employed by a firm or company, check your employment terms and any conflict rules before you apply.
Will AI take over lawyer jobs?
Nobody can answer that with certainty, and we will not pretend to. What these listings do show is that AI companies are currently paying practising lawyers, often $100 an hour or more, to check and improve how their models handle legal work.
