You passed the assessment. Why are there no tasks yet?

If you passed an AI platform’s assessment but have no tasks, you are usually in a talent pool waiting for a project that needs your profile. Projects start, scale and end on the client’s timeline, so work arrives in bursts. It is normal and rarely means a problem. Paying for priority access is never normal.
Key points
- Talent pool or talent network listings mean no specific project yet.
- A minimum hours requirement usually signals a live project.
- Treat AI tasks as variable income unless a contract says otherwise.
- Keep your profile and availability up to date.
It is one of the most common frustrations in AI work: you pass every step and then nothing arrives. Usually nothing has gone wrong. You are in a pool, and work comes when a project needs your profile.
How demand works
Projects start, scale up and end on the client’s timeline. A project for Japanese medical reviewers may need dozens of people for three weeks and then none. Platforms keep pools so they can fill these bursts quickly. Several listings on OpenJob state this openly, for example the talent pools marked “standing listing, not a specific opening”.
Signs to read in a listing
- “Talent pool” or “talent network”: no specific project yet.
- A minimum hours requirement: there is a live project that needs steady capacity.
- A project end date or a short duration: real work, but temporary.
Planning around uneven work
- Treat AI tasks as variable income unless a contract says otherwise. Some listings, such as LILT’s contributor roles, describe the work as supplemental for exactly this reason.
- Join pools that match different parts of your profile rather than many similar ones.
- Keep your profile current; some platforms match on stated availability.
When silence means something else
If a platform asks you to pay for training, equipment or “priority access” to tasks, that is not normal waiting. See our guide on checking whether a posting is genuine.

Frequently asked questions
How long until I get tasks after onboarding?
There is no fixed time. It can be days or months, depending on when a client project needs your language, field or country. Talent pools say this openly. Joining pools that match different parts of your profile increases the chance that one of them has work.
Can I contact the platform to ask for tasks?
Yes, politely and through official support. Ask whether your profile is complete and whether projects matching it are expected. Do not send repeated messages. Updating your availability and skills on the platform often helps more than contacting support.
Is no work after onboarding a sign of a scam?
Not by itself; waiting is common on legitimate platforms. It becomes a warning sign if someone asks you to pay for training, equipment or priority access to tasks. Legitimate platforms pay you and never charge workers to receive work.
